Winter hiking in Grächen


winterwandern-1Winter hiking - with or without snow shoes: Here you will find a description of all the resort’s winter hiking trails. Take your pick from a rich selection of adventurous and picturesque hiking trails (pink = winter hiking trails, green/white = snow shoe hiking trails).

1 Grächen-Egga-Bärgji, 1h 10'
At the post office, take Bärgjistrasse road and hike north-eastwards to the Egga hamlet with its beautiful chapel. Hike along a large road.

2 Grächen-Egga-Taa-Bärgji, 1 h 30'
If you don’t mind a short climb and prefer not to walk on the road, you can leave the road towards the end and walk in the forest. After approx. 15 minutes’ hike take Flurstrasse road which leads to the upper Bärgji resort. After a couple of minutes the road descends towards the valley. Soon you will arrive at the cozy, romantic Bärgji Alp and Jägerstube huts.

3 Grächen-Heiminen-Gasenried-Schalbetten, 1 h 20'
From the parish church, hike in southern direction past Hotel Hannigalp. After approx. 1h10min you will reach the pilgrimage church of Schalbetten. In Gasenried you can admire the marvelous chapel which is located against the backdrop of Ried Glacier.

4 Grächen-Bineri, 1 h 00'
At Walliserkanne restaurant, take a foot path to the sports center and then turn into the lakeside road. After 100 meters, leave the road at Haus Edelweiss guest house and take the foot path towards the forest. A comfortable trail leads towards Gasenried through larches and pine tree forests. At Rittigraben take hiking trails no 3 and 12.

5 Grächen-Bina-Site-Zer Mili-Niedergrächen-Grächen, 2 h 45'
Hike past Bina hamlet until you reach a bifurcation - take direction Kalpetran. After approx. 1h45' you will reach Niedergrächen, birth place of Thomas Platter, the famous Swiss humanist scholar and writer. From Niedergrächen the trail leads back to Grächen.

6 Forest loop trail: Grächen-sport center-Im Loch-Zum See-Grächen, 1 h 10'
At Walliserkanne restaurant, take a foot path to the sports center and then turn into the lakeside road. Follow this road all the way to the lake and take the forest trail back to the village.

7 Grächen-Heiminen-Im Loch-Zum See-Äbnet-Alp-Ritti-Grächen, 2 h 30'
Just next to the parish church, take direction Heiminen. Approx. 200 meters after Hotel Hannigalp, turn left into the forest trail and continue until you reach the lake. From there, continue to Äbnet Alp and cross the piste until you reach Bärgjistrasse road which leads back to Grächen.

8 Village hiking trail, 45'
At Walliserkanne restaurant take the foot path to the sports center. Halfway on the road, turn right into Thomas Platter trail. This trail leads to what used to be Waldheim restaurant. From there, take the lower trail which leads back to the village center.

9 Hannig snow shoe trail , 1 h
This route leads past Children’s Paradise to Stafelbar on a slight uphill road, and continues all the way to the Seetalhorn cable car station. From there, a scenic trail offers superb vistas of the surroundings and leads through a forest all the way back to Hannigalp.

10 Loch.Eggeri-Hannigalp snow shoe trail, 2 h 30'
Without snow shoes, stay on the normal road until you reach a long bend to the left - there take the lake road. From there the marked snow shoe trail no 12 leads along the old water canals to the Alpine hut, past larch and pine tree forests. After one kilometer, the snow shoe hiking trail leads back to Hannigalp to the right.

11 Grächen-Bina-Chummulti-Hohtschuggen, 2 h
At the municipal town center of Grächen, follow the Grächen-Kalpetran trail (quite steep in the beginning). Walk downhill past Bina hamlet until you reach the Zum Titter resort. Go right at the bifurcation. Continue on the forest trail to Hohtschuggen. If you find yourself in this area before sunrise, it is very likely that you might see chamois and Alpine ibexes!

12 Grächen-sport center-Loch-Eggeri-Äbnet, 1 h 20'
This hike starts at Hannigalp cable car station and leads along a comfortable road towards the lake. At the long left bend, walk along the old water canals to the Alpine hut, past larch and pine tree forests. Shortly afterwards, take hiking trail no 7 towards Bärgji or to the lake.
